stop on (something)

1. To cease moving while atop something. He stopped on the sidewalk to tie his shoelaces. You can't stop on those yellow boxes while you're driving.
2. To move right up to something or some point. Please stop on the red line until the car ahead of you has left the toll booth. Make sure to stop on the marks we've made on the ground, or you'll be out of camera shot.

stop on something

to go as far as something [on the floor or the ground] and then stop. Please stop on the line. You are supposed to stop on the white line or behind it.
