get (the) clearance to (do something)

get (the) clearance to (do something)

To receive formal permission to do something, especially because it involves something classified or secret. Hey, you need to get clearance from a supervisor to go into the lab—you can't just waltz in there whenever you like. I haven't gotten the clearance from my boss to work in that system yet.
