hang (one's) hat on (something)

hang (one's) hat on (something)

1. To depend or rely on something. I can't just hang my hat on the great season I had last year—I need to keep improving if I want to make the team again.
2. To believe or trust something. Melissa has been known to exaggerate, so you can't hang your hat on anything she's said until we get Annie's side of the story.
