take a picture (of someone or something)

To photograph someone or something. Someone has been going around the property taking pictures—should we call the police? Hi there, I work for a marketing agency hired by the nightclub. Do you mind if I take a picture?

Photograph, as in I'd love to take a picture of your garden. This idiom was first used in the 1600s for making a drawing or other portrayal. It was transferred to photography in the mid-1800s.
