1. noun A meal prepared and served very quickly in a restaurant. The short orders in a lot of these roadside diners won't win any culinary prizes, but they're usually very satisfying in their own way.

3. adjective Of or relating to food that is prepared and served very quickly. Typically hyphenated and used before a noun. I worked as a short-order cook to help pay my way through college. The town is also renowned for its short-order marriages, supplied to tourists riding a high fueled by gambling, liquor, and any number of other vices.
4. adjective Of or relating to anything that is created, prepared, delivered, or supplied very quickly or hastily. Typically hyphenated and used before a noun. As a leader of a major company, you sometimes have to make tough short-order decisions that have the potential to positively or negatively affect your employees. The diner keeps a short-order counter open throughout the night to serve the numerous truckers who pass by at all hours.
5. adjective Of or relating to a shorter-than-average season of episodes. Typically hyphenated and used before a noun. It has been common in the UK for many years now to have short-order series with six or so episodes, but this trends seems to be making its way into American television as well. The network announced a slew of various short-order shows meant to test different genres that audiences might like to watch.

This expression, dating from about 1890, gave rise to the adjective short-order, used not only in short-order cook, a cook specializing in short orders, but in other terms such as short-order divorce, a divorce quickly obtained owing to liberal divorce laws.
