a little goes a long way

a little goes a long way

A small amount (of something) is all that is necessary for a certain outcome or effect. A noun can be used between "little" and "goes" to specify what's being used. You need to add some garlic salt, but remember that a little goes a long way. If you add too much, that's all you'll taste. A little flattery goes a long way. Overdo it, and she'll think you're just sucking up to her.
