1. Literally, to release or emit steam. Should I turn down the heat? That pot is letting out a lot of steam.
2. To release intense, pent-up emotions or energy by engaging in some kind of enjoyable, vigorous, or relaxing activity. We had a pretty bad fight, so Tom is down at the gym letting out steam. When work starts getting really frustrating, I like to go bowling with my friends to let out some steam.
