have been to the wars

have been to the wars

To have been injured, damaged, decrepit, or appearing as such, as one might be who has fought in a war. Primarily heard in UK, Australia. That must have been one heck of a fight. You look like you've been to the wars! At the end of the school year, all of my folders look like they've been to the wars.
