cut (something) to pieces

To cut, saw, or chop something into smaller segments or bits, especially in order to utterly destroy it. Sam grabbed a pair of scissors and began cutting his sister's picture to pieces. The car was in such bad shape after the accident that the only thing they could do was cut it to pieces.
