To be the first or earliest to do something. Primarily heard in US. This is very creative—your company is definitely going to be first out of the box with an idea like that.

AMERICANIf you are first out of the box, you are the first person to do something. Arco is definitely first out of the box with an alternative gas for cars without catalytic converters. Note: This refers to the game of baseball. A player runs out of the box, which is the marked area where the batter stands, towards first base after hitting the ball.
