nation
one nation a nation not divided by social inequality.
☞ One nation was a political slogan of the 1990s, associated especially with the debate between the right and left wings of the British Conservative Party. It had its origins in the notion of the gulf between the 'Two Nations' of rich and poor, which Benjamin Disraeli referred to in his novel Sybil (1845) and which formed the basis of his vision of Tory democracy.
