Origin

The phrase seems to be around since the 16th century and has been published in George Herbert's work titled ‘Outlandish Proverbs'. It talks about how when a person chooses to not spend his money and save it instead, he is one up rather than one down. In this version of the phrase instead of the word ‘earned', the writer has used the word ‘got'. This was later changed to ‘gained' and then changed to ‘earned'.

Bejamin Franklin is given credit to use the phrase in its current format in the year 1899.
