work (one's way) down the line
To proceed or progress from person to person or thing to thing in a series or line. One of the baristas finally started working down the line of customers that had started trailing out the door of the café. Just open your closet, make your way down the line, and pick out the clothes you don't wear anymore. Anything we can't sell, we'll donate. My professor gave me a list of books I should read as part of my PhD, so I've been spending the summer working down the line.
