turn the heat up

1. To put an increased amount of pressure on someone or something in order to achieve a desired action or outcome. Usually followed by "on someone." We need to turn the heat up on those guys so that they finally pay their debt to us. The new police commissioner vowed to turn the heat up on criminals across the city.
2. To begin doing something with increased energy, determination, or intensity. I know I haven't made a lot of progress yet, but I always turn the heat up when I get closer to a deadline. They were a little lackluster for the first half, but the team has really turned the heat up in the second half of the game.

turn the heat up (on someone)

Fig. to use force to persuade someone to do something; to increase the pressure on someone to do something. Management is turning the heat up to increase production. The teacher really turned up the heat on the students by saying that everyone would be punished if the real culprit was not found.
