to the rafters

to the rafters

1. Literally, to the ceiling (rafters) of an arena or building. Most often used of celebrated athletes whose jerseys are displayed from the rafters of their former home arena after their playing careers have ended. If you keep scoring like this, you'll go to the rafters one day too, like Gretzky and Coffey before you. Bobby's jersey is being raised to the rafters tonight in a pre-game ceremony.
2. To an extreme, possibly excessive, degree. Her mind was packed to the rafters with ideas for her new book. I have no interest in seeing that movie because it's been talked about to the rafters.
