the proverbial (something)
the proverbial (something)
Used to call attention to a word that is used within an established proverb or idiom in order to highlight its meaning in the context. The practice was very common up until the late 18th century, but now it is as dead as the proverbial dodo. The committee seems happy to kick the proverbial can down the proverbial road.
