take a stand against (someone or something)

To publicly assert one's strong rejection of or opposition to someone or something. I know this could put my job in the senate in jeopardy, but I feel I must take a stand against this despicable legislation. A huge portion of the country is taking a stand against the prime minister with a massive protest rally at the weekend.
