scrape (something) away from (something)
To remove something from some surface with or as with the vigorous scrubbing of a rough, sharp, or hard-edged instrument. He used a putty knife to scrape the old paint away from the wall. I used my fingers to scrape all the moss away from my grandfather's tombstone.
