1. verb, slang To charge (someone) far more for something than is fair or appropriate. Local shops have recently begun soaking customers for normally inexpensive items as supplies to the region continue being constrained. Because we didn't have a reservation during the busy festival, we got completely soaked when we went to book a room in one of the local hotels.
2. verb, dated slang To drink alcohol excessively, especially with the intention of getting drunk. We had been soaking all day long, so we were in no condition to drive anywhere that evening.
3. noun, slang A drunkard or alcoholic. Used especially in the phrase "old soak." My old man was nothing but an old soak. We'd have been better off without him. You need to get a handle on your drinking, son. You don't want to wind up an old soak with liver problems later in life, do you?
4. noun, slang A wild or extended drinking session. Tom found himself the recipient of $150, so we all hit the bars for a proper soak. He must have been on a soak, judging by his slurred speech and unsteady stance.

soaked

1. slang Very drunk. This is the fourth night in a row you've come home soaked. I think you have a drinking problem! I enjoy having a beer or two with my friends, but I've never liked getting totally soaked.
2. slang Charged an excessive or inordinate amount of money (for something). I remember when there was a dairy shortage a number of years ago, and we all got soaked for the simplest things, like a gallon of milk or a block of cheddar cheese. My dad is a shrewd haggler, so I always bring him with me when I'm making a large purchase so I know I'm not getting soaked.
