a little bit (of something) goes a long way

a little bit (of something) goes a long way

A small amount of something is all that is necessary for a certain outcome or effect. You need to add some garlic salt, but remember that a little bit goes a long way. If you add too much, that's all you'll taste. A little bit of flattery goes a long way. Don't overdo it, or she'll think you're sucking up to her.
