put (something) toward (something)

1. To earmark or use money for a portion of a debt or bill. I'm putting all of the money I make at my part-time job toward buying a new car.
2. To do or expend something in an attempt to achieve some goal or outcome. I failed my audition because I didn't put enough time toward learning the dance routine.
