pass (one's) expiry date

To go past one's peak performance, ability, or usefulness and into a state of decline, especially due to age. A reference to the expiration date marked on a perishable product. I think it's important to throw in the towel when you pass your expiry date. There just came a day when I realized I had passed my expiry date, and that I could no longer perform my duties as the company required.
