Above or beyond what is considered standard, normal, or acceptable. Used especially in reference to how much something costs. Primarily heard in UK. It has come to light that hospitals have been spending over the odds for everyday equipment and supplies that would cost a private citizen far less. In order to get the construction work done in time, the local council has paid over the odds to bring extra engineers, contractors, and workers on board.
