pick (one's) spot

pick (one's) spot

1. To take action or engage in something carefully and judiciously. The boss has been in a bad mood all day, so you really need to pick your spots if you don't want to get yelled at. You guys shouldn't attack when the defense is set up like that—you need to pick your spots better.
2. In cricket, to intentionally hit the ball in a certain direction or to a certain part of the field. Wow, he really did pick his spot—he hit the ball exactly where he said he would.
