1. To have a sexual relationship with someone other than one's romantic partner. Deep down, she knew he had been playing away for years, but she couldn't bring herself to confront him about it.
2. In sports, to play a game in an opponent's home stadium. The team will play away for the next three games before returning home for the first match of the playoffs.
