1. To regard or recognize someone or something as being a particular type of person or thing. Often used in passive constructions. Consumers know our brand as a sign of quality and reliability. He's known as a very strict person, though he can be quite kindhearted when you get to know him. Although it is a very popular internet browser, within tech circles it is known as a sloppy, inefficient mess.
2. To be acquainted with someone or something under a specific name. Her real name is Margaret? I only know her as Calliope. The film's original title is "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi," but Western audiences will know it as "Spirited Away."
