in a state of nature

in a state of nature

1. In a primitive, uncivilized state, as one would find in nature; lacking political, legal, or moral order. Humans in a state of nature will choose self-preservation over any notion of altruism every time. The paleo diet, which focuses almost entirely on unrefined, unprocessed foods, argues that it most closely resembles the diet of humans in a state of nature.
2. Not wearing any clothes; naked. My roommate constantly walks around the house in a state of nature. I think I'm going to find a new place to live.
