have (someone) under (one's) wing

To be someone's benefactor, tutor, protector, caretaker, or nurturer. It has somehow become part of my job that, after every graduation cycle from the local university, I have three or four new interns under my wing. Our parents died when we were quite young, so my grandmother had me and my sister under her wing for most of our lives.
