How is (someone) making out?

1. Used to inquire about another person's wellbeing. Hey, great to see you again! How are you making out? How's your sister making out these days? I heard she was in the hospital recently.
2. Used to inquire into the state of someone's progress, as with a project or workload. A: "Hey, Tom. How are you making out with that finance report?" B: "Nearly finished!"
