have a head start

To have an advantage over someone or something, often because one has gotten an early start before the official or typical time to start something. Billy liked to have a head start on his homework before leaving school so he had more time to play with his friends when he got home. I knew I had to have a head start on the project so that I didn't miss the deadline.
