get the draw on (someone or something)

To acquire an advantage over another person or entity; to catch someone or something in a vulnerable position or situation. The phrase refers to drawing a gun on someone first. I think we'll get the draw on the defense if we run this play next. The police received an anonymous tip and got the draw on the would-be robbers when they entered the bank.

Fig. to be faster than one's opponent in a fight. (Alludes originally to an Old West gunfight.) The sheriff got the draw on Arizona Slim and shot him in the arm. Bill's competitor got the draw on him. She was the first one in town to start selling those popular new shoes.
