draw away (someone's or something's) fire

To attract or distract an attack in an attempt to prevent the target from harm. This phrase can be used literally to refer to gunfire. When I came in late, my sister drew away Mom and Dad's fire by turning up the TV. The mother goose drew away the hunters' fire by charging at them.
