but for the grace of God
A phrase used when one has avoided a bad or unpleasant situation and credits the direction, blessings, or assistance of God (or some higher power). A shortening of the phrase "there but for the grace of God go I." Wow, I could have been in that accident had I left the house earlier, but for the grace of God! The effect of the disaster on the local economy has been devastating. But for the grace of God that I still have a job!
