couldn't catch a cold

slang A jeer directed at an athlete who struggles with catching the ball. It is a pun in which the phrase "catch a cold" refers to becoming ill with the common cold (something that happens involuntarily). That bum in the outfield couldn't catch a cold—it's only the first inning, and he's already dropped two pop-ups!
