词组 | God's gift to the world |
释义 | God's gift to the worldSomething or someone particularly propitious or welcome or marvelous. This expression, dating from the first half of the twentieth century, is nearly always used ironically or sarcastically of a person who either is very conceited or is regarded as anything but God-given. Thus Ellery Queen’s mystery The Four of Hearts (1938) has a chapter entitled “God’s Gift to Hollywood,” and fellow mystery writer Margery Allingham wrote, “Amanda was God’s own gift to anyone in a hole” (The Traitor’s Purse, 1941). |
