To create an exit by channeling, tunneling, etc. A noun or pronoun can be used between "dig" and "out." The groundhog dug out of its burrow and advanced on my herb garden.

and dig someone or something outto excavate in order to get someone or something out of something; to dig about in order to get someone or something out of something. She dug out the roots of the tree. The dog dug itself out of the rubble of the fallen building.
