used for registering disbelief, despair, surprise, satisfaction UK, 1929 Often used in a wry or semi-humorous manner; since the 1950s usage is likely to provoke the rejoinders “not now” or “later” or “no thanks”, etc. Also used in many combinations and elaborations, all with same sense.
