Probably of World War I vintage. Beale noted, in 1984 that the Chinese Army refer to the same article as a “cow’s-cunt-cap.” Soldiers learn the term in the first few days of training. They now learn not to use the term in the presence of women.- — Argosy, p. 81, July 1966
