A derogatory term coined during the 1940s at University College Galway for students of agriculture; probably from Irish Coillte Mach (County Mayo), regarded (wrongly) as a remote place. Other possible etymologies: coillte (woods) and cúl and (a rear entrance to an important house, used by social inferiors).
