crank noun- methamphetamine hydrochloride in powdered form; any amphetamine; methcathinone US, 1969
On 15 September 1966, jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason wrote to sang lexicographer Peter Tamony, reporting that on 6 September he had heard the word “crank” used by a “young Negro pusher” in San Francisco”s Fillmore district. On 9 October 1967, Gleason wrote Tamony a second note, clarifying that “crank” was the same as “meth,” not “heroin.” Peter Tamony heard the term again on 12 April 1968, in a speech at a meeting of the California Folklore Society in Berkeley. - — William D.
