From the extinct Australian Aboriginal language Dharug (Sydney region). Originally, since 1833, referring to “large boulders”, it has undergone a reduction in size over the decades. As a technical term of geologists it refers to smallish stones of dark reddish chaceldony that litter the surface of large areas of the arid inland. Colloquially it is used of any rock, stone or pebble suitable for throwing.
