Folk-etymology offers the example of American actor John Wilkes Booth who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. The assassin jumped on stage and broke his leg. Unlikely. It is remembered in use in the 1930s, and is suspected to be of English origin; it is certainly widely used in the UK. |
