a point of honor

A particular matter, topic, or action that one considers of great importance to their pride, honor, or reputation. The fact that I ran my campaign on my own money and still managed to win has always been a point of honor with me. It became a point of honor for the country to build its military to a size that could rival its peers on the global stage.
