You are absolutely right, I couldn’t agree more. This colloquial Americanism dates from the first half of the 1900s. The British mystery novelist Dorothy Sayers used it in Murder Must Advertise (1933): “‘The idea being that . . . ?’—‘You said it, chief.’” See also you said a mouthful.
