you don't get something for nothing
Nothing in life is free; you have to either work, pay, or otherwise contribute for anything that you want to have. Often used to indicate the suspiciousness of something that is being advertised as free. Look, if you want something to eat and a place to stay, you'll have to do some work around here. You don't get something for nothing. A: "They're promising an all-expenses-paid trip to Paris in the summer. You just have to attend some seminar while you're there." B: "Aha, you see? There's sure to be some fine print regarding that seminar. You don't get something for nothing in my experience, especially a trip like that!"
