1. To ignore or intentionally overlook some crime, wrongdoing, breach in regulation, etc., especially that which one has a responsibility to report or enforce. I know I didn't follow the rules, but can't you just turn the other way? All these predators got away with it because administrators just turned the other way and pretended it wasn't happening.
2. To ignore some situation in which one should be able to help or intervene. I felt guilty turning the other way like that when the man asked me for spare change, but I only had enough for my bus fare. We saw someone getting mugged in the park across the street, but we just turned the other way and kept eating our meal.
