thanks a lot

An expression of one's gratitude. Though "thanks" is more informal than "thank you," the addition of "a lot" adds emphasis. Can be used sarcastically to mean the opposite. Hey, thanks a lot for your generous gift—we really appreciate it. A: "Here you go." B: "Thanks a lot—I can't reach those high shelves." A: "Here, I found some more invoices for you to sort through." B: "Gee, thanks a lot."
