sua sponte

sua sponte

From Latin, meaning "of one's own accord," used in law to refer to an action by a figure of authority, usually a judge, without a request or prior motion by one of the parties. The judge issued a sua sponte order for the case to be dismissed. The court of appeals has decided sua sponte to hear the case again.
