1. A male animal that is kept for breeding. A number of the studs on our ranch have fathered champion race horses over the years. I've heard that stud dogs can be incredibly difficult to keep as house pets.
2. slang By extension, a man who is very virile, sexually attractive, or sexually promiscuous. It's the classic double standard that men who have a lot of sex are considered studs, while women who have a lot of sex are considered sluts. There's a stud over at the bar who's been checking you out all night. You should go over and talk to him!
