the story goes (that)

It is being said or rumored that (something) is the case, whether or not it is true. The story goes that after filing for bankruptcy, the CEO fled the country and lives as a farmer in Tibet. I'm not sure if it's true, but the story goes she planted evidence against her father-in-law so that she would become the leader of the party.
